Quarterback: 1987-1988
Mike was the starting quarterback for the Mineral Point High School football team in 1987 and 1988. He is the son of long-time coach Ron Murphy and his wife Linda. Mike played with his older brother Pat while his younger brother, Brian “Moose” served as a ball boy for the team. Much of Mike’s credit goes to offensive coordinator Ted Evans who brought a “pass happy” playbook to the program in 1987. Mineral Point made the WIAA football playoffs in 1987 for the first time in school history and defeated De Soto in the first round.
In 1988 Mike was selected SWAL Most Valuable Player and received Wisconsin High School Football Association All-District recognition. He was first team All-Conference quarterback, Dodgeville Chronicle Valuable Player and first team quarterback, Telegraph Herald All-Area Team honorable mention. Mike was also voted Co-MVP as well as Co-Captain by his teammates.
In the 1987 season Mike was selected SWAL first team All-Conference quarterback, Dodgeville Chronicle first team quarterback, Telegraph Herald All-Area Team honorable mention. Mike was also voted Co-MVP by his teammates.
For his football career, Mike set records at Mineral Point for passes attempted 747, passes completed 365, total passing yards 4,115 yards and touchdowns 33. He also established single season records for passes attempted 317, passes completed 178, and passing yards 1,880. Mike set the foundation for future star quarterbacks at Mineral Point such as Matt Lindsey, Mike James, and Andy Palzkill who each helped build Mineral Point into one of the most prolific passing schools in the state. Coach Murphy and Coach Evans deserve a lot of credit for the success as well.
Following graduation from Mineral Point, Mike attended UW-Platteville and earned a degree in Business Administration. Currently Mike is employed at Spectrum Brands in Middleton. Mike and his wife Tere reside in Mt. Horeb with their three beautiful children - Gabi, Chloe, and Cade.
