Tight End/Defensive End/Placekicker: 1971-1973
John Schmit, a 6'2" and 175 lbs. end was one of Mineral Point's rare four time All-Conference Players, being named as a first team player both ways in his junior and senior years. Wearing number 82, John played three years of varsity ball, lettering in 1971, 1972, and 1973, and served as one of the 1973 captains. John was the team's leading receiver all three years he played varsity ball, finishing his career with 52 receptions for 763 yards and four touchdowns. At defensive end, John totaled 104 tackles.
John was also the team's kicker in his junior and senior seasons. In those two years he kicked off 31 times for a total of 1250 yards, for a 40.32 yard average. John ended his high school career as Mineral Point's most accurate place kicker, converting 13 of 16 PAT's for an 81.25 percent accuracy.
Following his senior season, in addition to the all-conference honors, John was named to the Dodgeville Chronicle All-Area Team as both an Offensive and Defensive End. He was also recognized by the Wisconsin Press Association as an honorable mention End for their 1973 All-State Team.
John was a three year letter winner in both track, where he did the shot put and excelled at the high jump, and in basketball, where he was one of the main components of Mineral Point's 1974 State Runner-up team. After graduation, John earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1979. At the time of his induction, John had created his own Structural Engineering Design firm in Escondido, California.
