The (3-3) Fennimore Golden Eagles traveled to face the (4-2) Mineral Point Pointers for the Pointers' homecoming game.
The opening drive for the Eagles looked promising as they marched all the way into the red zone early after stringing together back-to-back short runs and passes. However, the Pointers put together three straight stops before Freshman
Boyer Watters captured an interception in the end zone to bring the drive to an end.
The highly anticipated SWAL battle brought an offensive drought, resulting in a low-scoring contest highlighted by strong defensive performances from both sides. For the Pointers,
Sawyer Dannenberg totaled one sack and eight tackles.
Liam Carey proved crucial on the defensive side of the ball, leading the team with 11 tackles, while Jake Dannenberg,
Cole Pautz, and
Easton Brunett each added 10.
The Golden Eagles also forced three interceptions, two of which came from Cooper Imhoff, with the other picked off by Jackson Scheckler. Defensively, Brayden Washburn led the Eagles with one sack on the night, while Colton Tollefson added six tackles.
The Pointers opened the scoring as the final seconds ticked away in the first half, converting a field goal to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
After the break, the Eagles were quick to make their first offensive mark of the game. Cooper Imhoff picked off
Liam Carey for his second interception of the game, setting the Eagles up around the 30-yard line. Jackson Scheckler then found Liam Kelley just short of the goal line, setting Fennimore up with first-and-goal. The drive was capped off by a Scheckler quarterback keeper to put the Eagles on the board with six. After a failed two-point attempt, Fennimore took a 6-3 lead early in the third quarter.
The rest of the quarter continued much like the first half, with both defenses leaving little room for either offense to gain momentum. That changed in the final minute of the quarter when Liam Kelley placed a beautiful punt at the 1-yard line, pinning the Pointers deep in their own territory. Carey and the Mineral Point offense were unable to get the ball out of the end zone, and an intentional grounding call resulted in a safety, putting the Eagles ahead 8-3 heading into the final quarter of the night.
The Pointers responded by driving the ball all the way down the field, with Carey finishing the possession on a quarterback keeper into the end zone. Mineral Point attempted a two-point conversion in hopes of extending the lead to a field goal, but the attempt failed. Still, the touchdown gave the Pointers a narrow 9-8 advantage with eight minutes remaining.
The back-and-forth action continued as the Eagles marched down the field on a nearly seven-minute drive before settling for a field-goal attempt from around 20 yards out. Freshman Alex Hernandez stepped into the spotlight with just 1:30 remaining on the clock. The kick went up but sailed wide left, giving the Pointers a huge break as they held onto their 9-8 advantage.
The Eagles managed to force another quick three-and-out from the Pointers, but it ultimately was not enough. The missed field goal proved to be the determining factor as Mineral Point held on for a thrilling 9-8 homecoming victory over the Fennimore Golden Eagles.
Turnovers played a major role throughout the defensive battle. The Pointers captured three interceptions, including two in the red zone by
Boyer Watters and
Elliot Kite. Freshman
Owen Leonard added Mineral Point's third interception, while the Eagles finished the night with two costly red-zone turnovers.
